Machine Knitting

Machine knitting is not a replacement for hand knitting but more like another option in creating garments. A knitting machine- also known as a knitting loom or frame- creates a whole row of stitches in one movement. This produces finer knits commonly seen in commercially produced sweaters. Some stitches however will be easier done by hand.

The patterns used for machine knitting can be created using punch cards, a computer, or by manually setting the needles. Using a knitting machine can be intimidating as they are far more complex than sewing machines. Taking lessons will help the knitter become familiar with the machine.

The knitting machines are available in different sizes and produce different knits accordingly. The bulky machines create heavy knits used in thick cabled sweaters. Standard bed machines are good for lace and knitted suits they can also create other styles such as fairisle, tuck, slip, intarsia and manual cables. Mid-gauge machines are for garments that look and feel like handmade knits. Whatever machine is chosen it’s important to make sure the knitter is educated about the sizes and what weight yarn can be used.
