Loom Knitting

Many of those who love to knit are afraid to make the crossover to loom knitting for fear of it being difficult. The truth is knitting on a loom is not much more complicated. The key is making sure the knitter is using the right loom for the job.

A round or oval loom is an alternative to a circular knitting needle. They can be made of plastic or wood. They have grooved pegs and a knob or hook at the top to keep the yarn from slipping. Loom knitting on a round or oval loom can create both flat and circular items.

Figure eight looms, S looms, or afghan looms are slightly more complicated. The confusion comes from the fact that there are two types of these looms. The single sided versions can create blankets, Afghans, etc. The double sided versions-called boards- produce items with two sides and are much more complicated.

Overall loom knitting is just a matter of patience and following the instructions. Many knitting patterns can be adapted for use with loom knitting. Another thing to keep in mind is the further apart the pegs are the looser the weave, doubling up on the yarn can give a tighter stitch.
