Knitting Yarn

Choosing the right yarn for a project is critical, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t any sway from what the pattern states. In general as long as the proper weight is used, the fiber type can be varied. The yarn weight refers to the thickness of the yarn.

The weight of knitting yarn can range from super fine to super bulky. The higher the number, the heavier the weight and the fewer stitches per inch.  The weight, needle size, and number of stitches per inch are listed on the label.

Knitting yarn can be made from many different materials; wool, cotton and bamboo are some of the popular choices. Many people don’t like to knit with cotton because it can be slippery and is not elastic. Cotton does have some benefits though; it’s lightweight and good for summer, very durable, and can be washed.

Bamboo yarn is fast becoming popular because it is made from a renewable resource. Bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial and biodegradable. It has UV protective qualities, is lightweight and breathable, is strong and flexible, and can be very soft. The downside to bamboo is that it loses strength when wet and tends to swell, it must be hand washed, and sometimes the fibers are not very cohesive.
